Neonatal Nurses, You are no longer alone…

The greatest gift that neonatal nurses give is one of hope for the future. With the depth of care and compassion shown by neonatal nurses for the most frail and fragile in our society, they help to provide children with a future and their parents with hope.

If we were to ask anyone in the nursing profession what our greatest need is, the answer would invariably be “support”. Very often the best support is from people who know what we are struggling through, can empathise with our frustrations, share our sorrows and delight in our successes.

We therefore decided to join hands in order to ensure that we are recognized as a discipline in our own right and to provide the support that is so desperately needed.

Through friendship and a common interest, the Neonatal Nurses Association of Southern Africa (NNASA) was formed in February 2007. By bringing nursing specialists together from across the public and private sector, a forum has been created within which to share and encourage one another. Starting with a small group of passionate nurses in KwaZulu Natal, the association already has members from throughout South Africa and in surrounding countries.

International support and guidance is provided through membership of the Council of International Neonatal Nurses (COINN). This is an international forum of national Neonatal Nursing Associations who are associated with the WHO and various NGO’s promoting the well-being of mothers and infants.

Our motto “Reach for the Stars” reflects our desire to achieve excellence in neonatal nursing, against all odds and our logo optimizes our aim to nurture both the infant and the nurse.
